FIFA commemorated Liverpool's Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, with solemn tributes before the Club World Cup quarterfinal matches held in Orlando, Florida, and Philadelphia on Friday.
The brothers, aged 28 and 25 respectively, tragically passed away near Zamora in northwestern Spain. Their Lamborghini crashed and ignited on a remote highway stretch shortly after midnight on Thursday.
At Camping World Stadium in Orlando, prior to the Al Hilal versus Fluminense match, players gathered at midfield as the video board displayed a photograph of the Portuguese soccer stars. A moment of silence was observed by all in attendance.
In Philadelphia, at Lincoln Financial Field, where Brazil’s Palmeiras met Chelsea, a black-and-white image of the brothers was shown. Players from both teams wore black armbands as they honored the brothers with a silent tribute.
Pedro Neto, Chelsea player and Portuguese national teammate to Diogo Jota, visibly honored his friend. Neto made the sign of the cross upon entering the field, carrying a jersey displaying the first names of both Jota and André Silva. During the moment of silence, Neto, assisted by Enzo Fernández, held up the jersey for all to see.
Spanish authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Initial reports suggest no other vehicle was involved, and a blown tire may have been a contributing factor.
Jota's passing occurred merely two weeks after his marriage to Rute Cardoso, his longtime partner, following a Premier League-winning season with Liverpool. The couple leaves behind three children, the youngest of whom was born last year.
Silva was a player for the Portuguese club Penafiel, competing in the lower leagues.
