Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon, has become the target of online criticism following reports that he allegedly declined a performance by Lady Gaga at his wedding to Lauren Sanchez. The reason? A reported $6 million fee.
Rumors circulating earlier this week suggested that both Lady Gaga and Elton John were considered to perform at Bezos's wedding in Venice. Both artists allegedly quoted a price of $6 million each. However, viral reports claimed that Bezos turned down both offers.
The reports sparked outrage among social media users. Many questioned Bezos's decision to forgo a performance by a major artist over the reported fee. One user sarcastically asked, "What’s the use of being a billionaire if you won’t even book Gaga?"
Others joked that Bezos opted for a Spotify playlist instead of paying the performance fees. One commenter stated, "They made guests dance to Lady Gaga and Elton John on Spotify. All because he didn’t want to pay them performance fees."
Another user added, "Imagine being worth a quarter trillion dollars and not spending $6M on Lady Gaga for your wedding." One comment went further, "Jeff Bezos is a multibillionaire couldn't pay Gaga or Elton John $6 million to perform at the most important night of his life, his own wedding? What an a*****e, he spent more just booking those castles and fortresses in Venice alone to end up using Spotify."
However, the internet's outrage may have been based on inaccurate information. TMZ refuted the speculation, labeling the story as "BS." Sources close to the musicians stated that neither Lady Gaga nor Elton John were ever contacted about performing at the wedding.
The $56 million wedding did feature performances by British singer Ellie Goulding, who sang several songs, and Matteo Bocelli, son of Andrea Bocelli.
The Venice wedding hosted a number of celebrities, including Tom Brady, Orlando Bloom, Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and Sydney Sweeney.
