Haddin Calls for 'Attitude Adjustment' from Shubman Gill After India's Fielding Flaws in First Test Loss

Following India's five-wicket loss to England in the first Test, former Australian player Brad Haddin urges captain Shubman Gill to improve the team's fielding attitude. Haddin links poor catching to the IPL and emphasizes that fielding excellence requires commitment. India dropped eight catches, costing them dearly, especially with Ben Duckett's match-winning performance.

Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Brad Haddin has issued a warning to India's new Test captain, Shubman Gill, emphasizing the need for an "attitude adjustment" following India's recent five-wicket defeat to England in the opening Test match of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy 2025. The match was held at Headingley.

Despite India boasting five centurions throughout the match, their loss was largely attributed to a subpar fielding performance. The team's inability to secure catches, dropping eight across both innings, ultimately allowed England to successfully chase down a target of 371 runs.

India's fielding woes were particularly evident in the case of England opener Ben Duckett, who was dropped in both innings. Duckett capitalized on these errors, scoring a remarkable 211 runs, including a match-winning 149 in the fourth innings. His outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match award, propelling England to a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

"Every great team, regardless of the era, shares a common trait: exceptional fielding. I believe this is a legacy that Gill must now instill within this team. He needs an attitude adjustment," Haddin stated on the Willow Talk podcast.

The former Australian keeper also hinted at potential issues arising from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, suggesting a correlation between the tournament and declining catching standards.

"If you aspire to field well and maintain competitiveness, it all boils down to attitude. You can engage in all the technical training off the field and have access to numerous coaches, but it won't make a difference. Even during this year's IPL, the catching was abysmal. And that could be a consequence," Haddin elaborated.

The Indian team's lackluster fielding overshadowed their batting performance, where they managed to post competitive totals in both innings. The pace attack, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, struggled to make a significant impact, further compounded by the dropped catches.

Team India is currently preparing for the second Test match, scheduled to be held at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham from July 2-6, 2025. The team must urgently address their fielding concerns to level the series.

England has already announced their squad for the second Test, with Ben Stokes continuing as captain. The squad includes key players such as Jofra Archer, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes, as they aim to capitalize on their lead in the series.
