Daniil Medvedev’s US Open clash with Benjamin Bonzi on Sunday night turned into a chaotic spectacle, with a photographer entering the court at a pivotal moment and the crowd erupting into prolonged boos. The disruption delayed the match by more than six minutes and left the Frenchman, Bonzi, waiting nervously before serving on match point. The incident occurred in the third set, with Bonzi leading 5-4 after taking the first two sets. After missing his first serve on match point, a photographer stepped out of position before Bonzi could attempt his second. Chair umpire Greg Allensworth immediately intervened, instructing the photographer to leave the court. As per tennis regulations, Bonzi was awarded another first serve due to the delay.

Medvedev, visibly frustrated, approached the chair and expressed his anger. “He wants to go home, guys. He doesn’t like to be here. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour,” Medvedev shouted into the microphones. The 2021 US Open champion then encouraged the crowd’s loud boos, creating a circus-like atmosphere at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Eventually, Medvedev even tried to calm the fans so Bonzi could serve, but the damage was done. When play resumed, Bonzi double-faulted, and Medvedev secured the game. The third set went to a tiebreaker, which Medvedev won, extending the match. The drama drew comparisons to Medvedev’s 2019 US Open appearance on the same court, where boos from fans fueled his performance. He credited the crowd’s energy for helping him reach the final that year and ultimately win the title two years later. While Medvedev used the disruption to his advantage, Bonzi was the unintended victim of a bizarre turn of events. The seven-minute delay highlighted how quickly momentum and focus can shift in tennis and how even a small distraction can completely change the course of a match.
